Workshop and Artist

The Duncan House gallery and workshop, Strathaird Steading

The Duncan House gallery and workshop is located in the old Strathaird Steading on the Isle of Skye, stood just above the home of the Ancient MacKinnon Chiefs in Kilmarie and overlooking Loch Slapin.

The gallery is 11 miles down the single track road on the way to the breathtaking village of Elgol, through the magic shire of Torrin. On the way, one will usually pass professional and amateur photographers snapping pictures of Blaven or spotting the odd sea eagle circling. Along this less traveled road are fishing boats and beaches, shops and a fine restaurant.

At the end of the road is the fishing village of Elgol, with beautiful views of the Cullins and the islands of Soay, Canna, Rum, Muck, and Eigg. It is the gateway to walks and boat trips to Loch Coruisk and Camasunary beach. Undiscovered and wildly breathtaking is this part of the grand Isle of Skye and much poorer is the person who never experiences it. All of the jewellery and knives are designed and hand crafted from start to finish by Garth at the Steading.

Garth Duncan carving in the workshop

Garth Duncan started making jewellery in 1972. Although he is best known for his Ancient Celtic knotwork and Pictish style, he has also designed and makes many modern pieces. As a jeweler, he deals in fine diamonds, every kind of high quality gemstone and fancy setting techniques. He alloys his own gold and silver, works in platinum and a non-allergenic white gold alloy that is so white it needs no electro-plating.

Garth and Angus

It has taken many years to learn and perfect the many methods and disciplines required to take traditional art work and diverse projects to a fine jewellery level. Garth’s level of expertise has prompted much interest in custom-made bespoke jewellery and knives. Many customers have commissioned very elaborate items, from traditional Scottish Sgian Dubh, unique wedding and engagement rings to a 5 foot staff made of 5,000 year old bog oak. Garth welcomes new and challenging commissions and will work with each client’s specifications and budget. Please visit our commissions page for examples of some of Garth’s most elaborate work.
